Research

Our research

Violence against women and children affects everybody. It impacts on the health, wellbeing and safety of a significant proportion of Australians throughout all states and territories and places an enormous burden on the nation’s economy across family and community services, health and hospitals, income-support and criminal justice systems.

EVALUATION REPORT

Evaluation of the Northern Territory’s men’s behaviour change programs: Key learnings for policy and practice

This resource summarises the key learnings from ANROWS’s Evaluation of the Northern Territory’s men’s behaviour change programs. It will be useful for people who are interested in interventions with people who use violence in the specific context of Northern Territory, and Australia more broadly.

ANROWS was commissioned by the Northern Territory (NT) Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities (TFHC; now Department of Children and Families) to undertake process evaluations of two community-based, government-funded MBCPs in the Northern Territory:

The two evaluations sought to understand the contexts of the programs, how they were being delivered in practice, and to compare this to quality practice considerations for running of MBCPs in the NT.

This resource contributes to the evidence base in relation to MBCPs by:

  • sharing lessons learned through the evaluations in relation to the enablers and barriers to the effective delivery of MBCPs in the NT context
  • highlighting key areas of quality practice across both NT MBCPs and providing specific examples as to how each MBCP was found to be delivering quality practice in those areas
  • drawing together the most critical recommendations from the evaluations for consideration by government, funders and MBCP implementers.

This resource highlights key areas of quality practice found in the NT MBCPs through the evaluations, including:

  • prioritising women’s safety support
  • collaborating with other service system agencies
  • responding flexibly to risk
  • working towards cultural safety for Aboriginal participants
  • committing to continuous learning.

The evaluation summary was developed as part of ANROWS’s Evaluation of the Northern Territory’s men’s behaviour change programs.
