Our research

Violence against women and children affects everybody. It impacts on the health, wellbeing and safety of a significant proportion of Australians throughout all states and territories and places an enormous burden on the nation’s economy across family and community services, health and hospitals, income-support and criminal justice systems.

ANROWS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Panel

Thursday, 16th November 2017

ANROWS has established the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Panel to keep in touch with researchers, practitioners and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisations about research grants and potential partnerships to reduce violence against women and children.

ANROWS is pleased to invite people to register for the panel by completing the form available here. The panel is continually updated and you can submit a form at any time.

About the upcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Stream Grants Round 2017

In December 2017, ANROWS will invite expressions of interest from members of the ANROWS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Panel to take part in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Stream Grants Round 2017. The aim this grants round is to promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander expertise, interests and perspectives in violence against women research.

The ANROWS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Stream Grants Round will support the implementation of the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010–2022 (the National Plan). National Priority Areas for attention in the Third Action Plan are: 1. Prevention and early intervention. 2. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their children. 3. Greater support and choice. 4. Sexual violence. 5. Responding to children living with violence. 6. Keeping perpetrators accountable across all systems.

ANROWS seeks to fund up to $200,000 of research on a broad range of topics relating to violence against women based on the following core principles:

• Research is informed by, and promotes strengths-based perspectives on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. That is, research acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resistance and survival (Rigney, 2006, p 39), rejects and challenges deficit-based assumptions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and seeks to build the evidence base for understanding the protective factors that contribute to the survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as some of the longest continuous cultures in the world.
• Research upholds the political integrity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their right to self-determination as established under the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. That is, research is prioritized according to the interests and needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, is of benefit to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples (Rigney, 2006) and research privileges the leadership, voices and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples throughout the entire research process from research prioritization to research design, research practice and dissemination.
• Research acknowledges the heterogeneity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.

Researchers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community controlled organisations are eligible to apply. Successful grants will be selected by an advisory group consisting of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researchers, practitioners, policy experts and community leaders.

If you are interested in taking part in the upcoming Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Stream Grants Round 2017, please complete and submit the form for the ANROWS Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Panel, making sure to tick the box to indicate your interest and include a brief outline of your proposed project, by 11 December 2017.

ANROWS warmly encourages all applicants, including research students and early career researchers to contact us for more information, or to work with ANROWS and our advisory group members in developing your research proposal. Likewise, if you are a community organisation with an identified need for research, but without a research team, ANROWS is pleased to work with you on finding potential researchers.
