Evidence to Action & Local Action as Evidence: Findings from the Building Safe Communities for Women and their children Action Research Initiative.

Friday, 23rd February 2018

A public forum to showcase the successes and challenges encountered by local communities working to end violence against women will be held in Sydney tomorrow, along with the launch of a report of findings from associated action research.

Communities across Australia are increasingly looking for ways to more effectively respond to and reduce domestic, family and sexual violence. Forty communities across Australia were funded by the Commonwealth Government’s Building Safe Communities for Women and their children (BSCW) grants program to establish local community initiatives. The Government also funded Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) to assist local communities with action research to guide their work and share their learnings with other communities across the country.

ANROWS CEO, Dr Heather Nancarrow, said the initiatives were a good example of the growing intolerance for violence against women and the desire in the general community to “do something about it”.

“The willingness of local communities to get behind Australia’s National Pan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children, with seed funding from the Commonwealth Government is a very encouraging sign”, said Dr Nancarrow.

“Ending violence against women and their children is every-one’s responsibility, and local action, under a nationally co-ordinated effort, is key to success”.

“I’m very pleased that ANROWS has had a part to play in the ongoing development of these local initiatives and sharing their learnings with others, through our report “Evidence to action and local action as evidence”, she said.

The forum is fully subscribed, with 130 participants registered to participate during the full day event. Copies of the report and presentations will be available on the ANROWS publications webpage following the forum.
