Our research

Violence against women and children affects everybody. It impacts on the health, wellbeing and safety of a significant proportion of Australians throughout all states and territories and places an enormous burden on the nation’s economy across family and community services, health and hospitals, income-support and criminal justice systems.

Evidence brief for policy and practice

Children and young people’s mental health and domestic and family violence: What’s the link?

Insights from “Investigating the mental health of children exposed to domestic and family violence through the use of linked police and health records”

This resource draws on research funded by ANROWS and led by Dr Carol Orr from The University of Western Australia to build the evidence base for those working in policy and practice with children and families about the connections between DFV and children’s mental health and wellbeing.

This resource will answer the following questions:

  • What is mental health?
  • Why is positive mental health so important for children and young people?
  • What’s the link between DFV and children’s mental health?
  • What has this study found about DFV and children’s mental health?
  • How can this study be used to inform policy and practice?

It translates findings from the “Investigating the mental health of children exposed to domestic and family violence through the use of police and health records” project.
