Our research

Violence against women and children affects everybody. It impacts on the health, wellbeing and safety of a significant proportion of Australians throughout all states and territories and places an enormous burden on the nation’s economy across family and community services, health and hospitals, income-support and criminal justice systems.

ANROWS invests in six more projects to tackle domestic and family violence perpetration

MEDIA RELEASE | Tuesday 23 July 2024

Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) is pleased to announce a further $1.49 million investment in six additional projects, advancing research on understanding domestic and family violence perpetration.

This additional investment, delivered through the National Priority Research Fund, builds on the previous $2 million investment announced by ANROWS in June 2024, increasing the total number of projects aimed at understanding domestic and family violence perpetration from eight to fourteen. This initiative supports the National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032 and targets priority areas identified in Australia’s National Research Agenda 2023-2028.

The projects will focus on engaging sectors beyond those that specialise in family, domestic and sexual violence, including health and education as well as engaging LGBTQIA+ communities. The selected projects are drawn from a diverse range of universities and sites of innovation, including Burnet Institute, University of Melbourne, Monash University, La Trobe University, RMIT University (dually funded by the NSW Women’s Safety Commissioner), and Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak.

One of the newly selected projects is led by First Nations researchers, bringing the total number of projects under the National Priority Research Fund run by First Nations researchers to three. These new projects will be delivered by the end of June 2026.

The investment for these new projects is being funded through the additional $4.3 million in funding announced by the Australian Government in May 2024 to further ANROWS efforts to expand the evidence base for pathways into and out of perpetration of family, domestic and sexual violence in Australia.

Dr Tessa Boyd-Caine CEO at ANROWS said,

“Ending violence is a shared responsibility that requires the involvement of all sectors. This additional investment allows us to expand our research to new areas and address the complex and multifaceted nature of violence. By doing so, we can ensure a lasting, safer future for all women and children and prevent violence across generations.”

Hon Justine Elliot MP, Assistant Minister for Social Services and the Prevention of Family Violence, said:

“This significant investment underscores the Australian Government’s commitment to reducing family, domestic, and sexual violence. Supporting research into perpetrator behaviour and the drivers of violence is crucial to implementing effective prevention and intervention solutions. We are proud to support ANROWS in this essential work and look forward to the positive impact these projects will have.”
