FACT SHEET We’re all progressing together: NCAS findings for Australian states and territories
This resource will be useful to Australian policymakers and practitioners seeking to understand attitudes and understanding of violence against women in their jurisdiction.
This resource highlights results from Attitudes matter: The 2021 National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey (NCAS), Findings for Australian states and territories. Each jurisdiction’s overall progress toward improving attitudes and understanding of violence against women is compared with results for Australia as a whole, with significant findings from each state and territory also summarised.
By considering state and territory prevalence data from the 2021–22 Personal Safety Survey (PSS) next to these jurisdictional findings, this resource illustrates the disconnect between respondents’ low recognition that violence against women is a problem in their own suburb or town and actual prevalence rates of violence across Australia.
This resource includes a series of infographics (also provided separately on the NCAS microsite for ease of sharing) that cover:
- overall improvement in attitudes and understanding of violence against women, by each jurisdiction and Australia
- prevalence statistics and community attitudes about violence being a problem in Australia and in respondents’ own suburb or town, by jurisdiction and Australia
- highlighted findings for each state and territory.
This resource provides policymakers and practitioners with an overview of each state and territory’s current understanding and attitudes towards violence against women and how they have progressed over time. It translates findings from two key population surveys, Personal Safety, Australia (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2023) and Attitudes matter: The 2021 National Community Attitudes towards Violence against Women Survey (NCAS), Findings for Australian states and territories (ANROWS, 2023).
