ANROWS Conference: Evidence in Action
Call for posters
People are now invited to submit proposals for the ANROWS National Research Conference poster exhibition.
This complements the call for panel submissions.
Posters will display non-ANROWS-funded research projects addressing issues of domestic, family or sexual violence against women and their children. They will be selected based on their engagement with the six National Outcomes of The National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010–2022 and guided by the conference theme: Evidence in Action.
Bringing together researchers, practitioners, policy-makers, and survivor-advocates, the conference is an opportunity to discuss “what works?”—reflecting on who an initiative works for, in what circumstances, and how we know it is effective. Professor Nadine Wathen, Canada Research Chair in Mobilizing Knowledge on Gender-Based Violence, will deliver a keynote address, drawing on her deep expertise in evaluation and knowledge translation and exchange to ask these questions.
Rather than featuring single-author presentations, the conference will be structured around conversational panels showcasing examples of evidence-driven change in practice.
When: 28–30 April 2020
Where: Hilton Adelaide, 233 Victoria Square, Adelaide
Upcoming event: Fact sheet launch
Recounting women: What the data tell us about intimate partner homicide
On 10 October ANROWS is launching a new fact sheet, based on the 2018 Data Report from the Australian Domestic and Family Violence Death Review Network (ADFVDRN).
Domestic and family violence lethality: The facts about intimate partner homicide highlights key facts about intimate partner homicides in Australia (2010-2014) that followed an identifiable history of domestic violence.
Newly appointed State Coroner Teresa O’Sullivan will lead a panel discussing the importance of this data, the role of the Domestic Violence Death Review Teams, and how we can honour the lives of the homicide victims by learning from their deaths.
Recounting women: What the data tell us about intimate partner homicide will be held at Sparke Helmore Lawyers in Sydney City from 5:30pm on Thursday, 10 October 2019.

Professor Leigh Goodmark in Conversation with Paul Barclay
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear Professor Leigh Goodmark, internationally recognised scholar of domestic violence and the law, being interviewed by award-winning journalist Paul Barclay.
In Conversation Leigh Goodmark will be held at the Banco Court in Brisbane City from 6:00pm on Wednesday, 4 December 2019.
Prof Goodmark will be talking about ‘decriminalising’ domestic violence: challenging us to understand intimate partner violence not only as a criminal law concern but as an economic, public health, community, and human rights problem.
This event has been organised by ANROWS in partnership with the University of Queensland’s School of Law and will be recorded by the ABC and broadcast on Radio National as part of the Big Ideas series.

Gender-based Violence Roundtable
On Tuesday 24 September, Michele Robinson (ANROWS Director, Evidence to Action), joined leading researchers in the field of gender-based violence to discuss the latest findings from Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
The panel, chaired by Dr Sarah Cooke and including Associate Professor Jan Breckenridge, Professor Vera Mackie and Professor Zhang Yi, discussed the ways that media, workplace contexts and cultural factors contribute to perpetuating gender-based violence across the region.
Michele (centre) highlighted the work of ANROWS as a partner with the kNOwVAWdata initiative, which delivers training to improve measurement of the extent and nature of violence against women in Asia and the Pacific.
Community attitudes workshops
Re-shaping attitudes through data, narrative and action
A series of workshops about the National Community Attitudes towards Violence Against Women Survey (NCAS) are being held in Victoria throughout October.
Run in partnership by Respect Victoria, VicHealth and ANROWS, these workshops are designed for professionals working in the primary prevention of violence against women. Participants will hear about the NCAS findings and explore ways to leverage the insights in communications and program design.
