Workshop: Evaluation readiness, program quality & outcomes in Men’s Behaviour Change Programs

This free workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to hear, reflect upon and discuss findings from the upcoming ANROWS Research Report Evaluation readiness, program quality and outcomes in Men’s Behaviour Change Programs, based on ANROWS research conducted by Andrew Day, Rodney Vlais, Donna Chung and Damian Green. Led by Rodney, the first three sessions will involve presentations and participant discussions on:

• Dilemmas and complexities when setting minimum standards for MBCP provision;
• Encouraging and ‘enforcing’ minimum standards of practice through best-practice accreditation and compliance systems;
• Capability-building, practice development and support systems for the MBCP and broader perpetrator intervention program industry;
• Approaches to program evaluation, including what might be required for a program to be evaluation-ready;
• Outcome measures, including debates on what counts as success in this work;
• The use of Program Logic models and Monitoring & Evaluation Frameworks;
• Measuring and strengthening program integrity;
• Tailoring group-based interventions to individual perpetrators, in ways that are conceptually consistent with the highly gendered nature of family & domestic violence; and
• Safety & accountability planning as a promising strategy to embed throughout a MBCP.

Rodney will draw upon the multiple methodologies conducted as part of the research to broadly present the findings and invite participant reflections and discussions. This will include the project’s literature review, consultations with MBCP industry representatives across 13 overseas and Australian jurisdictions, victim-survivor perspectives, and focus groups with practitioners from WA, SA and Victoria.

In the final session, Andrew Day will lead a panel discussion involving the chief investigators of the research together with a Western Australian participant and sector representative. This will enable workshop participants to raise questions and suggest implications of the findings for their local practice and policy contexts.
